LET'S TALK DEPORTATION
1. TOTAL ENCOUNTERS in the year 2023 were 2.4 million. From May 2023 to January 2024, DHS has removed or returned over 520,000 individuals, the majority of those had entered illegally through the SW border over the past 3 years. That number is more than for any fiscal year since 2013.
President Biden's executive actions aim to close the border after 2,500 daily encounters. In addition, it offers a path to legality to various segments of undocumented persons.

2.What has been done by DHS to control border entries:
a) CBP ONE APP, introduced in Jan. 2023, where appointments can be obtained at ports of entry. In one year, through Jan. 2024, 459,000 (87%) of non-citizens have been processed with this system, were given appointments and authorized to stay.
b) PAROLE: Granted to lawful arrivals through the end of Jan 2024 to 75M Cubans, 144M Haitians, 64M Nicaraguans, 92M Venezuelans.
c) Operation APOLLO to intercept illicit drugs such as fentanyl and cocaine.
d) R00T CAUSES OF MIGRATION, Executive Order 14010 Y2022. The strategy focuses on a coordinated approach to improve the underlying causes that push Central Americans to migrate. It leverages the expertise and resources of a broad group of private and public stakeholders to address economic insecurity, combat corruption, strengthen democratic governance among other measures.

3.VALUE OF IMMIGRANTS TO US GDP: represent 14% of the US population and wield $1.3 trillion in spending power (48% Hispanic, 25% Asian). In Florida, with 21% of the population, immigrants are responsible for up to $105 billion in spending power. Three Fourths (3/4) of undocumented are “essential” workers - mostly in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, leisure, and hospitality. They drive economic recovery after Covid, are younger, and start 25% of new firms in the US.
Unemployment in April 2024 was 3.9% - THERE ARE JOBS!
From Andres Oppenheimer's opinion June 27,2024 in the Miami Herald, where he cites a study by the Center for Global Development, a Washington think tank, which examined the number of crossings over the past 25 years. Most importantly, it found that irrespective of the party in power, crossings have fluctuated depending on the availability of JOBS in the US! - janitors, maids, gardeners, etc.…. According to the US Chamber of Commerce, there are 9 million jobs for 6.4 million unemployed. In Fla., there are only 53 available workers for every 100 jobs.

4.CONTRIBUTION OF UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS:
a) Contributed $13 Billion into Social Security in 2016 and $3 Billion to Medicare. They receive no benefits. This is significant, given that Social Security funds are projected to be depleted by 2034.

b) Undocumented workers use the ITIN (Individual tax Identification Number) issued by the IRS to open bank accounts, pay taxes and get mortgages. 31% or 3.4 million own homes.

5.IMMIGRANTS AND CRIME: This is a MYTH and not based on fact. From Henry Cabot Lodge to Donald Trump, first-generation immigrants have not been more likely to be imprisoned than people born in the US since 1880. The likelihood of an immigrant being incarcerated is 60% lower than that of people born in the US.
