Cuban American Women Supporting Democracy (CAWSD) recognizes that a well-informed citizenry is essential for the vitality of a functioning democracy. We advocate for Public Education as a powerful equalizer in American society.
Our primary commitment is to the education and welfare of all students, irrespective of their race or identity, while also upholding the parental rights of all families. We emphasize the importance of teaching History as a valuable reference and educational tool for understanding both the present and the future. We firmly oppose the banning of books and the dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.
CAWSD actively participates in the monthly meetings of the Miami-Dade County School Board, championing the principles we stand for: education that is secular and free from favoritism towards any specific religion, sect, or political affiliation. We contribute to the agenda by speaking out during relevant Agenda items or during public hearings.
Current issues under consideration include:
1- Access to vouchers funded by taxpayers which come with "uncapped income limits." This system is draining billions of dollars and many students from traditional public schools, leading to closures (as seen in Broward) and the reduction of essential programs
.
2- A recent agenda item approved by the Miami-Dade School Board seeks to explore the viability of "volunteer" chaplains to provide counseling and support services to students and staff. CAWSD expressed opposition to this item during the May School Board meeting, which will be revisited once the feasibility analysis has been completed.
CAWSD presented the third of our 2024 lecture series.
We listened to three phenomenal speakers—Anna Hockhammer, Vice Mayor of Pinecrest; Dr. Cecilia Grande, ObGyn; and Steph Hanson Quintana from Catholics for Choice.
